Chinese New Year Gift Guide

As we reach the end of 2022, many of us will be throwing parties to celebrate the New Year on January 1st 2023. But did you know that not everyone celebrates the New Year on January 1st?

The Chinese New Year is celebrated at the start of the traditional lunisolar and solar Chinese calendar. This means that the Chinese New Year does not fall on the same date every year, similar to Ramadan and Eid.

People celebrate Chinese New Year by putting up decorations, setting off fireworks, and holding parades with lion and dragon dances. The colour red is extremely important to the Chinese New Year, and red envelopes are a way to send good wishes and luck (on top of some money too), usually given from the elderly to the young or bosses to employees.

Now you know the when, wheres, and whys, let’s get into how you can celebrate Chinese New Year in 2023.

Give Out Red Envelopes

One of the biggest traditions of Chinese New Year is the red envelopes, so why not spread good wishes and luck to your friends and family.

You can fill them with whatever you like – a note, chocolate coins, or even some money if you’re feeling generous!

We love these traditional red envelopes from Sous Chef! The product description even gives you some more information about Chinese New Year and how to use the envelopes in a traditional manner – including avoiding the number 4.

Fortune cookies a.k.a blessing cookies are a great snack to enjoy during Chinese New Year. We think they make for the perfect party favour for your guests or family, with each cookie holding different a fortune inside for the receiver.

If you are feeling super creative you could make your own fortune cookies and write your own personalised blessings inside for each one of your guests.

These Silk Road fortune cookies can be found on Amazon – which means prime delivery! They come in a fun family-friendly design and with each box containing 24 cookies, you’ll have more than enough to get you through the celebrations!

Sometimes getting the kids involved in celebrations can be quite the task, especially as they get older. Gifting them a fun Chinese New Year gift will help to get them in the spirit and keep them thoroughly entertained.

We love this Lego Brick Headz Lion Dance Guy who comes dressed in the traditional dragon costume that is used during Chinese New Year parades. Along with the character you also get some drums and a lantern as part of the set, coming in at £9.99 we think that this gift is a great deal!

Be warned though – this gift is only suitable for ages 10+ as it is a choking hazard.

The Year of The…

Every Chinese New Year has an animal related to it, a bit like star signs there are 12 animals which form a 12-year cycle which represents the year ahead and the people born within the year.

Starting from January 22nd, 2023 is the year of the Rabbit and people born from then till February 9th 2024 are born under the year of the rabbit and hold specific characteristics. If you know any expectant parents or newborns during this year an apt gift would be a small rabbit soft toy.

Previous Years of the Rabbits include 2011, 199, 1987,1975 & 1963.

Hopefully, you are more clued up on how you can celebrate the Chinese New Year and how you can spread love and good wishes to your nearest and dearest during the holiday!
